From the beginning of the sixth century before Christ, the Greeks established a settlement in the town of Sant Martí d’Empúries called Emporion. Later it would become a city with the objective of being a crossroads of several commercial routes and with a natural port.
At that time, the population of Sant Martí d’Empúries was completely surrounded by water, until finally it ended up integrated in the littoral due to the sediments of the river Fluvià.
L’Escala or La Escala is a municipality belonging to the region of Alto Ampurdán, in Girona, Catalonia. The ruins of the Greco-Roman city Ampurias there are in this region.
